SOPHIA HOUSE: Funding and Fundraising

Sophia House must secure over $4,000,000 for the entire project to become a reality. Phase I, Hesed Haven, is open for use, and is debt-free. Construction of the main conference building, retreat cabins, campground, staff housing, and the outdoor recreation facilities will cost over $3,000,000. Another $1,000,000 will be sought for an endowment fund. Income from the endowed fund will make it possible for Sophia House to provide scholarships for persons with disabilities who have limited incomes, to provide scholarships for care givers, and to provide for the on-going maintenance needs of Sophia House.

To date, we have received a lead gift of $500,000. In addition, we have a $500,000 challenge gift, which matches dollar for dollar all contributions up to $100,000 per year for 5 years beginning in 1997. The first 3 years of this challenge have been met and we are seeking contributions to match the remaining $200,000 and to complete the project.

The Sophia House Board respectfully invites you to consider a gift to help complete this project.

Bill Taylor, who suffers from post-polio syndrome, encourages your participation. He writes,

When I learned of the Sophia House Plans for a barrier-free, rural family-oriented vacation spot near sea level (to ease my breathing problem), I became eager to sign on. The impressive list of Friends of Sophia House gave assurance of support to the concept by leaders of many churches and synagogues as well as health care professionals. When Jeanne Biggar and Marian Windel, with whom I had served on several committees, asked me to work with them to make Sophia House happen, the answer was easy. There are many who, like me, will enjoy the physical freedom and pleasing environment Sophia House offers. The effort needed to realize Sophia House is large, but the rewards to those who build it as well as to those who use it will be immeasurable. Please join us in supporting this project!
