The Sophia House facility will be constructed with pine logs which provide a warm informal environment. The reception area with its fireplace lounge invites relaxation and the opportunity to engage in unhurried conversation as new friendships are made, and old ones renewed. The one-floor design permits access to all areas of the center. Meeting space is available in the four conference rooms of various sizes. For larger groups the worship space will accommodate up to 400. The library can also be used for small group meetings or a gathering place in the bedroom area. A full range of audio-video equipment (including television with decoder and VCR), and a Braille printer will be available. In addition, telephone, a Telecommunication Device for the deaf, fax, and computer networks will provide immediate access to the outside world.

The dining room, which can accommodate up to 100 persons in wheelchairs for meals, can also be used for receptions and dances. Equipped for teaching independent living skills, the kitchen has adjustable counter heights and cooking surfaces. The staff is flexible in providing meal times according to a specific conference design. Menus are planned to meet the special dietary requirements (food allergies, diabetes, low cholesterol, low salt, etc.) of the conferees.

The thirty-six bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, contain two beds, a sink, storage area and a desk. The bathrooms are equipped for individuals with a disability. Showers, which accommodate a wheelchair, have non-skid floors, grab bars, and a pull-down seat.

The conference rooms and worship space are equipped for those with hearing impairments, including closed captioning. Talking or vibrating alarm clocks are available for those with vision and hearing impairments. Indoor recreation includes an exercise room, a ramped, heated, indoor swimming pool, and a whirlpool with a lift.

Full accessibility strengthens the sense of confidence necessary to meet day-to-day needs. It is also important to the cultivation of skills necessary for successful participation in educational settings and in the work force. For those who have a disability of one type or another, the full accessibility in all areas of the center, including the kitchen, fosters the highest level of independence possible. Such a sense of independence is vital to maintain a positive self image and to develop healthy relationships with others. Sophia House is designed to enhance personal development for persons of all ages and all ability levels.
